In today’s episode, I’m going to talk about how to get the energy to do that good work every day. It’s about breakfast and making it into a ritual.
So many, no I would say too many of my lady leader clients say they don’t eat any breakfast or just take a small bite or of course some coffee. They say I don’t have time for it or I’m not hungry. They have all these great excuses and if this is you, what is your excuse?
The next thing they say is:
“Why are you even bothered about my breakfast? I didn’t ask you to help me with my breakfast, I asked you to help me with my overload, with all the things I have to do, it’s so much and I can’t stand it any longer.”
I explained that this morning ritual is going to help you with the overload.
Your problem is not the to-do list, it’s your mindset about the to-do list and your energy to be able to do anything about your to-do list. That’s what we’re talking about.
This is where the breakfast comes into the story.
Let me tell you about Sara.
She is a department manager at a plus size ladies clothing store. She has a team of 12 people under her and she also gets in and works in the store every now and then when there is a gap that needs to be filled.
At home, she has two pre-teenagers and she’s always very careful about what the kids eat for breakfast before they go to school but she never really thought about it for her own sake and for her own situation.
“I am grown up I don’t need that much. Actually, I don’t need anything at all because I’m overweight so I don’t need the breakfast.” That’s what she said.
She had a cup of coffee and maybe a bite of her kids’ food and then she rushed off to work. Worked all morning and was dead hungry by lunch. Grabbing some fast food on the go not thinking one second about her weight at that time. She didn’t have time to eat she said “Who has time to eat. Not a busy lady leader anyway!”.
Sara was a very stubborn lady and she was having a hard time to understand why I kept talking about her breakfast. But after a few discussions around mindset around one thing to change and about trusting the process she agreed to talk about the breakfast, and this is what Sara did in the end.
First, she set the clock to get up one hour earlier and eventually, later on, she also worked on going to bed one hour earlier in the evenings because she did need her full hours of sleep.
Then she decided what she wanted for breakfast and she went for a porridge with berries and milk, some orange juice and of course her coffee. She was very careful to see that she had the ingredients at home so she bought the right stuff to be prepared.
Then she decided the other part of having a good morning routine is to get the brain and body working.
You can do a short meditation.
You can read.
You can do a workout.
You can take a walk.
Sara decided to take a 20-minute walk in the morning.
And really that’s all it is.
You get up an hour earlier.
You go for a walk for 20 minutes.
You take a shower get dressed and then you sit down and eat your breakfast.
You do the things that you have chosen and you do it all in a slow motion so that you have time to get your thoughts ready for the day.
That being in slow motion and at more ease in the morning spilled over on the kids so they felt less stressed when they went off for school too.
Six weeks later she was very, very happy with the result because she was feeling so much more at ease. She was happier at work. She did things in a smoother way and she could eventually also reorganize her work to make her to do list a little bit less scary.
Ok so now you have made a morning routine which is very good, you can keep up the good work by making other small changes and better choices to boost your energy levels and decrease your stress levels even more.
You can change your food choices or you can change the workout activity that you’ve chosen till you find the one that you feel fits perfectly. And then you keep up the good work you do it every day, and one of these days it is going to feel like you don’t want to be without it.
It has become a ritual because a ritual is something you feel you have to do, you do with pleasure and you don’t want it taken away from you.
That’s exactly where you want to be with the good stuff. So keep up the good work.
