Today I’m out on my daily walk. I’ve done daily walks since so many years back and it’s one of the best things I’ve ever started doing. It’s not a routine it’s a ritual because I can’t live without it any longer.
So today I wanted to talk to you a little about why am I doing this and why would this stress management benefit lady leaders too.
You see my life has been good. Absolutely, it has been good but I’ve had my downs and disasters in my family and I have had hard times where you find yourself in a black hole and you don’t know how to get out and the stresses are eating you up from the inside.
Also, I’ve been in this life where I’ve been working full time having three kids at home and trying to get things together. It isn’t easy and many years ago I decided to stop this because I was heading towards depression and I wasn’t going to go into depression it was not my thing to do that, I didn’t want to.
I wanted to take control of my own life and I am so sure that you can do the same. What I have changed in my life is that I started to do things on a regular basis.
I change my food habits because before I ate so much Candy and sometimes I could just eat so much and I didn’t feel very well afterwards. One time when I was doing that together with a nurse in a healthcare clinic that I was working in and we all of a sudden realized “What are we doing. We’re eating all this junk.” And I actually stopped more or less totally, well not totally, but somewhat.
I changed my eating habits to be regular with a good breakfast then also a good lunch and evening meal and made it a priority!
I know so many business leaders especially lady ones, they don’t eat breakfast, they don’t have time, they rush away from breakfast from their kids, maybe take a bite, and then they have no time for lunch or they have lunch meetings with someone – how much relaxation is that? You have to be at your best if you’re eating dinner with someone.
So I made that change to see that I eat properly and I really take a break for eating. The evening meal it’s usually better with lady leaders who have kids because the kids need the good food and that’s what most Lady leaders make a priority. Their kids must have a good meal and good things on their plates so they would usually eat the same, does this sound like you?
I also changed my sleeping habits. That wasn’t that big a change for me because I’ve always been a morning person.
When you get up early in the morning, and I am most active at that time I can do so much more and what I did change was to use that time in a good sense and not waste it, but used it for those things that were hard to do, the things that I didn’t want to do that I had to concentrate on.
It’s good to have those in the morning where you can be effective. Then it doesn’t really matter what you do in the afternoon. In that sense, you can do all those things that you do by heart that you don’t really have to think about in the afternoon when your brain is a little bit more tired.
I go to sleep early because I get tired and I know that it’s different for different people, but the thing is to keep it regular your way at least. So if you do go to bed early and get up early in the week then you should do that more or less at the weekends to keep your brain in the best function.
Next we have the physical activity and this is where my walks come in. I do walks everyday and I do go to the gym and I do other physical things and I always take the stairs instead of the escalator, and so on if it’s possible. And all those little things.
When I started off with this I felt so much better, so much healthier yeah I would say younger because when you treat your body in a good way that’s a good thing.
This is why I think this is so good for my lady leaders the ones that I mentor and the ones that I go speaking for and with and the groups that I work with.
When you get it so that you find the way where you are feeling good that’s when you flourish. Not just with your work but with everyone else and they’ll think that maybe you’re doing a course in something but you haven’t you just changed some little habits in your daily life.
You know what if you’re a lady leader and you have a family I would say make them part of the journey because otherwise, they will ruin you because they don’t want you to change. If you want a change you have to have them on the same route too so that you can change for the better together.
When you feel good and you are less stressed and you have figured this out and can feel the ease in your everyday life you are going to be a much better boss I guess because you will be more relaxed and certain things won’t really matter so much.
Things will not grow as big in your mind because you can take it more at ease, so your job and your rewards will grow and you will be a real winner. All of your staff will think that you are the best.
I want to end this to recap the three small steps you need to make to get yourself out of that stress cycle just like I did:
> Regular sleep.
> Regular eating.
> Regular physical activity.
That’s what you need to get going.
